THMG Scholarships
The Haz Mat Guys have expanded their scholarship opportunities to support attending conferences.
Discussion: THMG hosts monthly podcast, The Roundtable, on the first Tuesday of the month at 8 p.m. Eastern. The podcast is supported by sponsors who contribute to the scholarship fund. This has allowed THMG to offer scholarships to 5 conferences and they are working on others. For more information, visit The Haz Mat Guys.
Upcoming Conferences
There are several conferences coming up soon. The 2025 EHS Summit, The Continuing Challenge, and the Virginia Hazardous Materials Conference will take place in September, the Hot Zone Conference will take place in October. In November, the Hazardous Materials Instructors and Incident Commander Conference comes to TX, and in January the Florida Hazardous Materials Symposium and Competition will be held in Daytona Beach.
Discussion: Conferences remain a cornerstone for maintaining currency, networking, and identifying new and emerging threats. Responders, planners, incident commanders, and support personnel should take the opportunity to attend when possible.
Chemical Safety Board
The Chemical Safety Board has launched an investigation into the July explosion at Horizon Biofuels in Fremont NE. Initial reports indicate that dust may have been a contributing factor. The CSB has investigated dust incidents in the past and released a combustible dust fact sheet to educate on the hazards and how to reduce the risk from dust incidents.
Discussion: The CSB continues to provide crucial information on chemical incidents and methods to reduce the impact of chemical emergencies at industrial facilities. Responders, emergency planners, trainers, and risk reduction personnel should use the information to reduce the likelihood and impact of chemical incidents in their jurisdictions.
PHMSA Federal Roundtable Report Released
The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, in conjunction with the International Association of Fire Chiefs and other federal agencies, released the 2025 Federal Partners Roundtable Report. The report identifies gaps in planning and training, needs of the hazardous materials community, and emerging threats and trends and discusses methods to address the needs of the hazardous materials incident prevention and response communities.
Discussion: Several new items were identified as emerging threats and trends that are anticipated to impact communities throughout the nation in the coming years. This critical report provides information to emergency planners and responders, allowing them to identify emerging issues and methods to address gaps and needs.
EPA Proposes Rescinding Endangerment Finding
The Environmental Protection Agency has proposed rescinding the scientific findings related to greenhouse gases. The findings served as the backbone for supporting electric vehicle subsidies. Rescinding the findings would allow federal support to be pulled back for electric vehicles.
Discussion: If the rule is rescinded, it may have an impact on the market share of electric vehicles. Responders and emergency planners will need to be cognizant of the rule and its impact on the vehicles in their communities.
