Chemical of the Week – Methyl Parathion

Methyl Parathion: No Second Chances

Methyl parathion doesn’t give second chances. This highly toxic organophosphate insecticide can shut down the nervous system in minutes by blocking acetylcholinesterase, the enzyme that keeps your muscles, including those that help you breathe, functioning properly. Though heavily restricted, it still surfaces in agricultural incidents, illegal applications, and poisoning cases where your rapid recognition and proper protection can mean the difference between life and death. Whether you’re first on scene at a farm exposure or responding to a suspected contamination, knowing methyl parathion’s dangers and having the right protocols in your toolkit isn’t just good practice, it’s survival knowledge for you and the people counting on you.

Have fun and let us know how you did in researching the hazards.
