Chemical Exposure Tied to Hearing Loss

A recent study has reiterated the link between exposure to some chemicals and hearing loss.

Discussion: Hearing loss is not uncommon in workers exposed to hazardous chemicals. The use of PPE, and adjusting PPE requirements to address the hazard, may result in improved outcomes.

EV and Electric Fires Impact Turn Out Gear

A study has linked an increase in the hazardous chemicals impregnating structural fire fighting protective gear in fires involving electric vehicles and photovoltaic installations when compared to other fires.

Discussion: Hazards associated with electric storage system continue to be identified, with long-term impacts still not fully realized. Responders and health and safety personnel should maintain awareness of developments and new research findings.

Fire Service Needs Assessment

The sixth Needs Assessment for US Fire Service is open for input.

Discussion: The needs assessment helps guide the nation’s fire service leaders, addressing current and emerging threats, and recognizing rising issues. Members of the fire service are encouraged to participate and submit their comments before February 15, 2026.

NIOSH Health Hazard Evaluations

The National Institutes of Occupational Safety and Health continues to offer no cost, health hazard evaluations to assist risk managers with addressing health and safety hazards in the work place.

Discussion: Risk management is key to reducing long and short term risk for responders. While the HHE program does not translate well to emergency response, assessments of hazardous facilities can provide guidance for emergency response and be applied to limit the impact of emergency incidents through pro-active risk reduction activities.

CWMD Year in Review

DHS’ Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction has released a review of their activities from 2025.

Discussion: CWMD offers a variety of activities that local communities can take advantage of, including training and exercise support, to assist with preventing and responding to WMD incidents. Emergency planners should make themselves aware of these programs and take advantage whenever possible.
