Upcoming Conferences

There are a number of conferences and classes happening in the near future. This month brings us HotZone in Houston and IAHMR’s conference in Plainview IN. In November, CBRNE Convergence takes place in Charleston SC, the Ohio HM Teams Conference comes to Solon, and the Hazardous Materials Instructors and Commanders Conference will be in San Antonio. Finally, the new year will bring us the Florida Hazardous Materials Symposium and Competition in January and the Southern Most HazMat Conference in February. Looking ahead, the New England Hazardous Materials Conference is coming to Springfield and is looking for presentation proposals and FDNYs Search and Rescue Field Medicine Symposium will be held in May.

Discussion:
Conferences provide a cost-effective means to expand your professional network, gain new skills, maintain currency and relevancy, and charge your batteries.

New Technology May Assist with Bio-Weapon Program Recognition

A recent article in The Bulletin describes how new technologies may assist with recognition of covert bio-weapons development facilities.

Discussion: Determining compliance with the BWC is, at best, difficult. Consequently, state actors may have active bio-weapons programs masquerading as legitimate research programs. Emerging technologies may make recognition of these covert programs easier, resulting in greater compliance with the treaty.

Fraudulent Respirators Studied

The National Institutes of Occupational Health and Safety recently released a report on their testing and assessment of fraudulent respirators that had been confiscated.

Discussion: Hazardous materials logistics personnel should only purchase from legitimate vendors and should ensure that the products that are purchased are certified, tested, and meet the requirements for performance.

Chemical Safety Board

The CSB has released an update on the investigation of the August 2025 incident at U. S. Steel in Clarington, PA. The incident resulted in 2 deaths and multiple injuries and the CSB is continuing the investigation process and will publish a report of findings and recommendations in the future.

Discussion: The CSB continues to provide critical, risk reduction services with a focus on improving safety for facilities and communities. Emergency planners, risk reduction personnel, and responders should utilize these reports and findings to lower risk and improve response.

Industry Pushback on Proposed Hazardous Materials Regulations

HazMat is reporting that transportation industry groups are pushing back against The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administrations proposed changes designed to improve safety and efficiency.

Discussion: While generally not an area where emergency response personnel focus, regulations do impact the types of incidents, severity, and working conditions of response personnel. Responders should be familiar with current rules and regulations and any proposed changes and their impact.

Chemical of the Week

The latest chemical of the week worksheets, Methyl Ethyl Ketone Peroxide and Potassium Hydroxide have been posted. They provide weekly chemical research training, reflecting incident research during initial response to hazardous materials incidents.
