Smaller law enforcement agencies often face unique challenges in the law enforcement field. Frequent changes in leadership and limited access to resources are some of the most common challenges. Many smaller agencies also face difficulties in bringing adequate leadership and management training to their departments. The IACP’s Leading by Legacy program was designed to address these challenges.

Turnout gear provides protection against dermal exposure to contaminants during firefighting; however, the level of protection is unknown. We explored the dermal contribution to the systemic dose of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and other aromatic hydrocarbons in firefighters during suppression and overhaul of controlled structure burns.

The University of South Florida and Tampa Fire Rescue have launched a randomized controlled trial to assess the effectiveness of a worksite exercise regimen targeted to reduce the risk of low back injury and disability in firefighters—a physically demanding occupation particularly prone to back problems that can lead to chronic pain and early retirement.
