Training Offered to Prepare for Active Shooters

In the wake of the mass shootings in places like Aurora, Colo., and San Bernadino, Calif., a growing number of businesses are hiring security experts to train employees on how to respond to a workplace attack.

Such shootings often occur in businesses. A 2014 FBI study outlined 160 active shooter incidents across the country between 2000 and 2013, and 46 percent of them occurred at a business.

Zika Virus Outbreak Prompts CDC to Activate Highest Emergency Ops Level

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Emergency Operations Center has been moved to Level 1, the agency's highest level, due to the risk of Zika virus transmission in the U.S., officials said today.

The Level 1 activation is "reflecting the agency’s assessment of the need for an accelerated preparedness to bring together experts to focus intently and work efficiently in anticipation of local Zika virus transmission by mosquitoes," the agency said in a statement.

Military Wound Dressing for Junctional Wounds Approved for Civilian Use

XSTAT 30, a hemostatic device for the treatment of severe bleeding in the axilla or groin area, was cleared for use in both battlefield and civilian trauma settings by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The clearance expands the device’s indication from use by the military only to use in adults and adolescents in the general population.

XSTAT 30 by RevMedx works by injecting a group of small, rapidly-expanding sponges into a wound cavity using a syringe-like applicator.

WHO: Zika Virus 'Spreading Explosively' in the Americas

The head of the World Health Organization said Thursday the Zika virus is "spreading explosively' in the Americas and called an emergency meeting next week to determine how to confront the crisis.

WHO director general Margaret Chan said it is “deeply concerning” that the virus has now been detected in more than 20 countries in the Americas since Brazil reported its first case in May 2015.

How Much Will the First Responder Anthrax Preparedness Act Cost?

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) this week released their cost estimate of the S. 1915 First Responder Anthrax Preparedness Act.

Under the bill, anthrax vaccines from the U.S. Strategic National Stockpile would be provided to first responders who volunteer to receive them, and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) would establish a tracking system for the vaccine and would provide educational outreach for the program.

Vaccines nearing the end of their labeled dates would be prioritized for utilization under the Act.
