If you're planning to become a firefighter, you may soon need EMS certification to join the ranks. EMs certification is being proposed as a job performance requirement (JPR) in the upcoming edition of NFPA 1001, Standard for Firefighter Professional Qualifications.
While some groups are supportive of this proposal, others argue that EMS certification is a costly, time-consuming requirement that puts unfair demands on firefighters, particularly volunteers; it takes two years to receive the U.S. Department of Transportation's (DOT) EMT certification.
