FEMA is currently seeking input into the National Incident Management System (NIMS) refresh.

NIMS provides a consistent nationwide approach and vocabulary to enable the whole community to work together seamlessly and manage all threats and hazards. NIMS applies to all incidents, regardless of cause, size, location or complexity.

A North Babylon fire chief with experience administering Narcan says there is a need for better training using the overdose antidote.

Chief Robert Cabano, of the North Babylon Fire Department, says he never had a problem with a patient until he was attacked by someone he was trying to revive with Narcan last Friday night. Cabano says he had just gotten home from dinner when he was flagged down by a neighbor who said her son was overdosing on heroin. Cabano, who is also a certified paramedic, says he administered two doses of the medication.

Ontario has unanimously passed legislation recognizing post traumatic stress disorder as work-related illness for police, firefighters and paramedics.

Under the old rules, first responders had to prove their PTSD was related to their job to be eligible for coverage under the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act.

New legislation that assumes PTSD is work-related for first responders passed third and final reading by a vote of 96-to-0.
