Traffic Incident Response Week is a time to recognize emergency responders and their tireless effort to help save lives at the scenes of traffic incidents across the country. Every year hundreds of emergency responders representing fire, law enforcement, emergency medical services, towing, and transportation agencies lose their lives while responding to incidents.

As research continues to show that firefighter's are more susceptible to medical issues due to their duties, the International Association of Fire Chiefs released "A Healthcare Provider’s Guide to Firefighter Physicals."

The guide addresses the diseases, exposures, illnesses, injuries and physiological demands that firefighters are most prone to suffer. It is designed to explain firefighting to healthcare providers and NFPA's 1582 physical requirements.

Fentanyl analogues and other potent synthetic opioids and analgesics may be absorbed through the skin, allowing the drug to enter a person’s body without the typical illicit drug ingestion methods such as smoking, snorting, injection, etc. In addition, opioids may be inadvertently inhaled in situations where suspected drug samples are disturbed and particles become airborne. These exposures may place other people, including first responders, at potential risk.

Since 9/11, firearms have accounted for 95 percent of all deaths from domestic terrorism. While IEDs remain relatively rare in the U.S. when compared with armed attack, the Boston Marathon bombing (2013) and the recent explosions in Manhattan and New Jersey (2016) warn of a growing domestic threat.
